My first adventure in Guatemala is quite the hike! Acatenango Volcano is probably the most popular activity for visitors to Antigua, evident from the sheer number of people I saw on the hike, and I was there in the low season! The hike was quite the strenuous one! Starting somewhere around 2200 meters above sea level, it took our group about 5 hours to reach our base camp which lay at 3700 meters. Where we spent a rather chilly evening marvelling at the frequent eruptions of the Volcano know as El Fuego. Starting with puffs of smoke popping up out of the clouds rushing through the valley. As night drew in and the clouds cleared we were met with views of orange lava joining the smoke! Unfortunately the very random nature of the eruptions meant I didn't get a lava shot. But many puffs of smoke. The following morning we rose super early to climb the last 2-300 meters to the summit of Acatenango. This was probably the toughest part of the 2 days of hiking with a very steep, rocky incline, which wouldn't be so bad, but it was dark. We just missed the sunrise but we did catch a stunning view.... for about 2 minutes. It was incredibly windy up there and shortly after arriving the clouds rolled in and the view was gone! The way back down was a touch easier than the way up. At least it was less tiring. It was actually quite slippery heading down, with the loose dirt terrain proving to be a bit treacherous. I was glad to have rented a walking pole. We eventually dipped back below the clouds and were greeted again to some stunning views of the area. In the end we had hiked a total of 16km up and down. Our guides could only apologise for Mother Nature interfering with the views, it was a bit cloudy at some inopportune times, but what can you do? It was still an incredible experience, I would do it again in a heartbeat. I hope you enjoy today's adventure, hope you're having a great day!
