Peter Somuah Last year, Peter Somuah, who was born 28 years ago in Accra, Ghana and now lives in Rotterdam, caused a sensation with his debut album Outer Space. He enhanced that debut with stunning shows at North Sea Jazz and ESNS, and earned an Edison. Somuah never tires of emphasizing how his music is rooted in the highlife and storytelling tradition of his native country, and how he tries to merge this with influences from Roy Hargrove and Miles Davis, among others. He has now found a home with the progressive German jazz label ACT Music. Letter To The Universe opens with an unmistakable statement, recited by spoken word artist Lisette Ma Neza, about the power of the word, after which Somuah's trumpet takes over with a dazzling Mission On Earth, in which the Rotterdammer expresses his love for Davis ' Bitches Brew expresses. If this leads to so much fire and passion in the studio, one can imagine how Somuah's band (Jesse Schilderink on tenor sax, Anton de Bruin keyboards, rhodes and production, Marijn van de Ven, bass, Jens Meijer on drums and Danny Rombout on percussion) on stage. The stopped trumpet and Fender Rhodes in Soft Touch then provide reflection again. Peter Somuah is not a unique musician, he leaves plenty of room for the feminine touch in his work, with contributions from the aforementioned slam poet Ma Neza and Latanya Alberto in the violin-lined Moonlight. The vulnerable traditional Odo is beautiful. Jazz for the future. Dietmar Terpstra
