Can riding and equestrian sports be compatible with horse welfare? In Part I, we looked at historical horse trainers who included violent and non-violent training methods in their systems and put it in the context of a survival society where the horse was a worker and where violence was normalised in all layers of society. Nowadays, violence to humans is no longer admissible. How can then we justify violence to horses? What are the reasons for people treating their horses cruelly? How can we do better and treat our horses ethically while avoiding spoiling them? These and other questions are addressed by Karen Rohlf, creator of Dressage Naturally (dressagenaturally.net). The seminars were hosted by Cheiron: The International Journal of Equine and Equestrian History.
