Gir National Park is most famous for being the last refuge of the Asiatic lion. It is the only place in the world outside of Africa where lions can be observed roaming freely in the wild. The park is considered a major conservation success story, with the lion population significantly increasing over the past decades. Other notable wildlife While the Asiatic lion is the star attraction, the park's dry deciduous forest and diverse ecosystem support a wide range of other animals. Mammals: Besides lions, you can spot Indian leopards, sloth bears, striped hyenas, and golden jackals. Herbivores include sambar deer, chital, nilgai, and the unique four-horned antelope. Reptiles: The Kamleshwar Dam within the park is a prime location for seeing mugger crocodiles. Other reptiles, such as the Indian star tortoise and monitor lizard, also inhabit the area. Birds: Gir is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 425 species recorded. The Indian Bird Conservation Network has declared it an "Important Bird Area". Bird species include the crested serpent eagle, brown fish owl, and various vultures. Tourist attractions and activities For visitors, Gir offers organized safaris and other ways to experience its natural beauty.
