Here is all the text used in the map... title and subtitle: HURRICANES SINCE 1851 Classified by the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale; Data sourced from the NOAA Centers for Environmental Information timeline annotations: Historical hurricanes have been meticulously estimated and reconstructed from accounts in the historical record. Trans-oceanic air travel and active hurricane hunting in the 1940s contributed to a dramatic rise in the number of recorded storms. Satellite reconnaissance beginning in the 1960s provided the first broad-scale vantage of Earth, dramatically improving identification and accuracy.
