Can specially trained dogs help detect oil hidden beneath freshwater? 🐕🛢️ In this HazMaTON Summer Webinar, Vince Palace, Head Scientist at the International Institute for Sustainable Development’s Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA), shares groundbreaking research on Oil Detection Canines (ODCs) and their ability to locate submerged and sunken oils in lakes. Poppy, a five-year-old English Springer Spaniel, was trained to detect specific oil types—even when buried meters below the surface. This study tested her ability to detect three types of oil deposits at 1–5 meters underwater in Lake 260, Northwestern Ontario. Results showed promising detection of weathered diluted bitumen and Bunker C oils, with ongoing research planned for deeper waters and ice-covered lakes. 🔹 Presented by: Vince Palace, IISD-ELA 🔹 Hosted by: Minnesota Sea Grant on behalf of the Hazardous Material Transport Outreach Network (HazMaTON) 📅 The HazMaTON Summer Webinar Series (July–September) explores how hazardous materials like crude oil move through the Laurentian Great Lakes region and beyond. 👉 Learn more about HazMaTON and watch past webinars: https://hazmaton.org/webinars/
