WOTR in Jharkhand: How Communities Are Driving Sustainable Change

In the heart of Jharkhand, the Oraon community is leading a quiet revolution. Oraon means ‘to roam’ and the community here is always in tune with nature, weaving life into the land they cherish. With support from Welthungerhilfe, the Bharat Rural Livelihoods Foundation, and the Government of Jharkhand, WOTR is empowering local communities like Oraon to drive systemic change by leveraging MGNREGA resources. The initiative focuses on building durable water conservation structures, strengthening local governance, and enabling communities to take charge of their natural resources. This work aligns with the broader Jiwi Daah Hassa initiative (Jharkhand High Impact Mega Watershed Project), a program dedicated to revitalizing life, water, and soil in some of Jharkhand’s most deprived regions. Launched in August 2020, this initiative has built structures to store more than 10 million litres of water, treated more than 463 hectares for soil conservation, empowered 634 women to establish backyard kitchens for better nutrition and planted 344 mango orchard units to provide secure sources of income. At the core of this transformation are the community members themselves—through regular Gram Sabhas, SHG meetings, and the leadership of 7 Wasundhara Sevaks, they are reclaiming their land, livelihoods, and traditions.
