Two days ago, I traveled to a remote village in Baja California with my friend Nicholas Hummingbird, who regularly organizes and leads these trips to offer mutual aid in support of his mentor Teresa and her family. They’re part of a small Indigenous community working to keep alive their language, traditional crafts, and land-based knowledge in the face of ongoing cultural erasure and material scarcity. Nicholas has been making these journeys for years, at his own expense, to bring direct support and supplies. This was the second time I’ve been fortunate enough to join him — this time alongside Christina and Jess. Thanks to your generosity, I was able to bring 35,740 pesos (about $1,969 after fees and conversion) — a direct offering from many of you — to help provide food, medicine, materials, and cultural classes for the community. In total, mutual aid amounted to around $3,000 (roughly 56,000 pesos) to support the family’s ongoing needs. We spent the day sharing food and stories, learning about clay harvesting and processing for their beautiful pottery, and simply being present with this family in their home. I feel deeply grateful to have been welcomed on this journey. This little video is just a glimpse into that day — a quiet offering in return for all we were given. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible. This won’t be the last time I ask for your support. Culture and language classes continue to grow, with as many as 40 participants each week learning about medicinal plants, traditional language, and cultural materials. The family has also expressed interest in hosting a multi-day workshop to share traditional practices like olla-making, basketry, and cordage. This will require more mutual aid — and I find so much comfort and joy in knowing that when we call on you, so many are ready to offer what they can. This is how our world works best: when we show up for each other in mutual aid and support — when we give ourselves to one another and to the land around us. #mutualaid #culturalrevitalization #baja #indigenousculture #healingtheland #nativeplants #traditionalcrafts #landback #communitysupport #decolonize
