This game is a masterclass in the "Fischer Twist"—taking a seemingly standard position and finding a tactical lightning bolt that ends the struggle before it even truly begins. Played at the 1967 Skopje International Solidarity Tournament, this encounter features Bobby Fischer facing Hungarian International Master Peter Dely. While Dely was a respected theoretician, he quickly learned that against Fischer, "respectable" booked moves could lead directly into a vertical drop. The Fischer-Sozin Attack Fischer was famously obsessed with the 6. Bc4 variation against the Sicilian Defense (often called the Fischer-Sozin). He loved the pressure the bishop exerted on the f7-square and the kingside in general. In this game, Dely tries to be clever with an early queen excursion (8... Qa5) and a central strike (10... d5), hoping to exploit the pin on the white knight. The Turning Point The game is essentially decided by a stunning tactical sequence starting on move 13. Fischer ignores the "safety" of his pieces to rip open the center: The Sacrifice: Fischer plays 13. f5!, inviting chaos. The Decoy: By move 16, Fischer executes a "desperado" exchange sacrifice (16. Rxf8+) that forces the Black Queen away from the defense of the king. The Finish: The final move, 17. Qa4+, is a geometric beauty. Black resigned immediately because the king has no safe haven, and the queen is lost.
