The island is part of Colombia and is one of the Colombian states with the same named capital San Andrés. The island and its beautiful beaches, and the nearby little islands are a favorite destination for many South American tourists. The city in the north of the island offers not only lots of shops, bars and clubs, but also a large beach called Playa Principal. As further south one goes as more nature with dense palm tree forests, hills up to 55 meters and untouched coast line one could discover. Especially the for the Caribbean typical white beaches, the deep blue sea and the coral riffs are very impressive. Nevertheless most parts of the coast line are made of rugged volcanic rock.
