Welcome to From Canada Citizens Forum, where we examine Canadian politics through the lens of democracy and media. On September 21, 2025, Jackie Etkin looks at the federal NDP leadership race. With the resignation of Jagmeet Singh and the loss of official party status (only 7 seats left in Parliament), the NDP is in deep trouble — and this leadership contest could decide the party’s future. Key candidates include: Avi Lewis, longtime NDP supporter, activist, and co-author of the Leap Manifesto. He argues for public options in food and telecommunications, stronger climate action, and a return to grassroots organizing. Yves Engler, supported by the Socialist Caucus, focused heavily on Israel–Gaza and broader left-wing issues. Heather McPherson, Alberta MP. Rob Ashton, president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. Lewis has already drawn attention by calling out the concentration of corporate power in telecom and grocery sectors, supporting public alternatives, and criticizing PM Mark Carney’s retreat on climate policy. His candidacy connects to NDP history (his grandfather David Lewis and father Stephen Lewis both led the party provincially/federally). 👉 In this episode, we explore: Why the NDP leadership race matters in 2025 What Avi Lewis’s platform means for ordinary Canadians How grassroots organizing could reshape the NDP Why mainstream media avoids giving strong left voices coverage Stay tuned as we follow the NDP’s leadership vote in March. #NDPLdr #AviLewis #CanadianPolitics #NDPRace #FromCanadaCitizensForum
