Full calendar of The Hope Sessions on www.facebook.com/ethno. ------------------------------------------- DETAILS OF WORKSHOP Tune Name - "Labajalavalts nr 2" & "Labajalavalts nr 1" From - Leesi village, Estonia Rhythm - It is a waltz, with 3/8 time signature. “This tune was played in the beginning of 20th century by bagpiper Jakob Kilström” ------------------------------------------- INTERESTING HISTORY/INFO ABOUT THE TUNE BY MERIKE - Jakob Kilström (1864–1945) was a fisherman in the village of Leesi on the Juminda Peninsula, as well as a church bellman and organist. At the age of 20 he made his own bagpipe and started learning to play it. Jakob had heard stories from older pipers in the area and from Finland. He was recorded in 1913 and 1932 on wax rolls. According to August Pulst's notes, Jakob was businesslike and concise, he didn't care much about his audience (the bagpipe was one of the highlights of the folk music tours of that time), sometimes he just said: "I'll play some more." ------------------------------------------- BIO OF ARTIST Merike Paberits is a musician and teacher mainly focused on traditional music. She graduated from Viljandi Culture Academy with an MA in Traditional Music and plays flute, bagpipe, sallow flute and Jew’s harp. She also creates music for different theatre productions. Merike has broadened her musical horizons at Ethno camps in Estonia, Slovenia and France, both as a participant and as a mentor, and participated in an exchange program at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg. She has completed the Ethnofonik training course for Ethno artistic leaders in 2012 and was part of Ethnofonik Allstars in 2017. Merike plays in these bands — Nikns Suns, Paberits & Tirmaste and Black Bread Gone Mad. ------------------------------------------- ABOUT ETHNO Ethno is JM International’s program for folk, world and traditional music. Founded in 1990, it is aimed at young musicians (ages 16-30) with a mission to revive and keep alive global cultural heritage. Present today in over 20 countries, Ethno engages young people through a series of annual international music camps as well as workshops, concerts and tours, working together with schools, conservatories and other groups of youth to promote peace, tolerance and understanding. At the core of Ethno is its democratic, peer to peer learning approach whereby young people teach each other the music from their countries and cultures.
