Though my banjo playing largely serves as accompaniment for song, I do often just improvise, letting my hands go where they will. I don't usually record or share those improvisations, since they are done quite spontaneously, and not in front of the camera. I realized today that I have not been doing much of that since my stroke on May 10th impaired the use of my right hand and arm, because the impairment, frankly, made my improvising not very satisfying nor relaxing to do. But now that my clawhammer playing is starting to move towards normalcy, I had the desire this morning to just sit back and play, and see what would come out, and I decided to do it in front of the camera. I found that I can, indeed, now just sit back and relax and play, just listening to and enjoying the sound of my own playing. I have always found that listening to my own playing as though I were listening to someone else (and enjoying the sounds that my banjo is making) to be central to developing good and expressive playing. Now that I can finally do that again, I will be trying to make it central to the recovery of all my banjo playing capacity. I consider this kind of banjo playing to be somewhat akin to meditation, so I am calling these little tunes that emerge "Banjo Meditations". This one, today, is called, "Improvised Banjo Meditation On A Winter Morning". It combines both fingerpicking and clawhammer playing, with the emphasis on clawhammer. It was recorded on the morning of 11 December 2019, on a 1927 Whyte Laydie banjo, tuned eCGCE, but with a capo at the second fret, making the actual pitches of the strings to be eDADF# . It is # 37 in my series of "Stroke Recovery" videos.
