Excerpts from the talk “The Nature of the Mind” by Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo. Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo (born 1943 in the United Kingdom) is an author, teacher and Buddhist nun of the Kagyu school of the Tibetan tradition. Raised in London, Tenzin Palmo was introduced to Buddhism at a young age and, at the age of 20, traveled to India, where she became a disciple of the eighth Khamtrul Rinpoche. She was one of the first Western women to be ordained as a nun in Tibetan Buddhism. For twelve years (between 1976 and 1988), she lived in seclusion in a cave in the Himalayas, dedicating herself intensely to spiritual practice. In her book “The Cave in the Snow”, she recounts her retreat experience and her journey of self-discovery. Tenzin Palmo later founded Dongyu Gatsal Ling, a convent for Tibetan nuns, promoting education and advanced practice for women in Buddhism. In her teachings, Tenzin Palmo emphasizes the importance of deep meditation practice as the path to cultivating compassion and understanding the nature of the mind, a path that requires discipline, courage, and dedication. Her work inspires practitioners around the world, being a symbol of determination, wisdom, and commitment to spiritual equity. 🙏 Purchase Tibetan Buddhism books through our link on Amazon: https://amzn.to/4h3ZImu 📚 Check out our list of recommendations: https://www.amazon.com.br/shop/corvoseco “If we had different types of sense organs, we would perceive our so-called reality in a totally different way. If you were a fish, a fly, or even a horse, you would have slightly different sense organs. They would interpret for you a reality that is equally real, but very different from the reality we perceive. For that matter, what is real, or what is unreal? If you were a nuclear physicist or a subatomic biologist, you would perceive this table in a very different way. To us, it seems solid, but to a physicist, it is clear that it is mostly space. But we do not perceive it that way, because our senses do not perceive it that way.” Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo. “The traditional Tibetan path emphasizes purification practices, such as the Avalokiteshvara fasting ritual, prostrations to the Buddhas of Confession, and the Akshobhya practice. If done correctly, these practices work on a very subtle level. However, regardless of the method chosen, the most important thing is to know one’s own mind. We always investigate what is out there, but we rarely look within.” Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo. “When we observe the mind, we begin to see it as a flowing river. At first, it is a turbulent waterfall. Then a bubbling brook. And then a long, slow river. Finally, this river dissolves into the ocean.” Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo.
