In this episode, I interview Dr. Rachel Swallow of Swallowtail Archaeology, about medieval castle and landscape archaeology, and the reconstruction of historical narratives by engaging with local populations as part of archaeological and historical research. Dr Rachel E. Swallow, FSA – known as the ‘Queen of Lost Castles’—is a castle and landscapes historian whose recent research reveals the lost stories of the Legend, Lady, and Landscape of Edward I-period castles in Wales. Founder of Swallowtail Archaeology – delivering expert research, writing, review, and public engagement in history, archaeology, heritage, and related fields—she offers fresh interpretations of historic sites and landscapes. With over 25 years of combined academic and commercial archaeology experience, Rachel specialises in re-interpreting forgotten earthwork and architectural remains within their wider historical and landscape contexts. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, Honorary Fellow at the University of Liverpool, and Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Chester, she is widely published and recognised for making medieval Britain’s stories vivid, accessible, and engaging.
