On the bench today is the SIRE LARRY CARLTON L3 P90 guitar. I was online recently and saw a picture of the SIRE L3 P90. After reading the high-level specs I REALLY wanted one for me and for a video on the channel. I liked the TV Yellow but could not find one available and instead went with the color – Surf Green Metallic. I am such a fan of the Les Paul Jr style of guitars in general. I absolutely love single pickup guitars and getting a P90 pickup in the bridge does not get any better. I have multiple Les Paul Jr style guitars in my collection by Epiphone, Gibson, and Harley Benton. I do not normally cover specs of a guitar this early in a video, but I feel I need to, so you understand why this guitar kind of blew me away. The guitar is made in Indonesia and China like the Epiphone. The body is made of Mahogany with what Sire calls a Sire L Junior Shape. The guitar comes in six colors. 1. TVY (TV Yellow) 2. CHERRY (Cherry) 3. TS (Tobacco Sunburst) 4. GT (Gold Top) 5. SGM (Surf Green Metallic) 6. BK.S (Black Satin) The set neck is made of Mahogany and has a C-Shape. The Fingerboard Material: Rosewood Edgeless a trademarked phrase (which means it has Rolled Fretboard Edges). The fingerboard Radius is 12" or 304.8 mm. The L3 p90 has 22 Medium Jumbo Frets. The nut is made of Bone with a width of 1.695” or 43mm. The guitar’s scale is 24.75" or 628.65 mm. The guitar has a single LC Vintage P90 (Soapbar) Pickup in the bridge position. The electronics consist of 1 Volume, 1 Tone. The pots are full size pots, and the output jack seems to be a good quality component. The Bridge is a compensated wraparound Bridge. Tuners are standard LC Diecast Tuner. Hardware Finish: Chrome Here is what is wild! This thing’s manufacturer suggested retail price is $399. Comparing specifications I would place this Guitar somewhere in between the Epiphone Les Paul Jr and the Gibson Les Paul Jr. Here is why. The Epiphone has an Indian Laurel fret board with no rolled edges. The Epiphone’s nut is a GraphTech nut. I prefer the Sire headstock because it is closer to a Gibson and just looks very distinctive than the Epiphone headstock. The Epiphone goes for $479 suggested retail. $80 more than the Sire. The Gibson lists for $1599 and except for the rolled edges found on the Sire the Gibson and the Sire necks pretty much have the same specifications including a rosewood fretboard. The Gibson nut is a GraphTech neck like the Epiphone. The Gibson comes with a really cool Gibson Hard Shell Case. The Epiphone and Gibson both come with electronics that include CTS pots and a Switchcraft Output Jack. At the end of the day the Gibson is $1200 more than the Sire. My guitar weighs 7 lbs. spot on or 3.175 kilos. The pickup measures 7.786 K ohms when measuring for impedance. Here are the things I like about the guitar. I really like the overall specifications and what you get for the price. I am disappointed in the Surf Green Metallic color. In the pictures the color looks like a satin surf green. When you get the Surf Green Metallic guitar it is a strange looking “off green” because of the metallic flakes. Hopefully, I will get used to it. I have seen the TV Yellow, and it is close to a normal TV Yellow color found on the other Les Paul JR guitars. I stated in another video about the Sire S3 (Strat) neck that the neck was the best neck I have ever experienced on an affordable guitar. The L3 P90 does not disappoint in this area with the C shape 12-inch radius neck I found the neck very easy and comfortable to play. Chunky, yet not like something you feel inclined to swing at a baseball with. Add in the rolled edges of the fretboard and the fretwork in general and it is just that much better. The guitar is light weight at 7 lbs. and easy to wear on a strap. There is no neck dive. In spite of the strange color of green the finish on the guitar is very well done. The tuners are keepers. With my eyes closed I would swear I was tuning a guitar with a great set of precision Grover tuners. They ARE SO SMOOTH to turn and tune the guitar. The single P90 pickup is thick with a lot of tone. Put this guitar behind any overdrive, fuzz, or distortion pedal and the guitar screams. Some of the reviews I read online complained about the single P90 pickup not allowing for much “tonal versatility.” Here is what I say. For god’s sake you are playing a Les Paul Jr style guitar with a single P90. You have the wrong guitar in your hands if that is what you are looking for. That is like going into a seafood restaurant and complaining because the fish tastes like fish. Lastly, I love the price on this thing. You could leave your Gibson at home and take this guitar out on gigs and not ever stress. You could actually buy three to four of the Sire guitars instead of the Gibson. Overall, this is a great value for the price. I would expect to pay at least in the $600 price range for the guitar. Excellent job, Sire.
