It contains music which the media have already dubbed 'ambient house', a phrase that has been attributed to The KLF as an off-the-cuff remark spoken to a journalist. Ambient house seemed as good as anything to call it and the phrase became a genre. Up til now, The KLF have created dance music ahead of its time and their classics 'What Time is Love' and '3 AM Eternal' were an integral part of the 'rave' scene throughout the summer of 1989. 'What Time is Love' was so popular that it engendered over ten cover versions, mostly on the continent, and The KLF released an LP of some of the best of these called 'The What Time is Love Story'. 'Chill Out' is definitely not dance music. It is music that grew out of spending 12 hours at a rave, dancing nonstop all night, and then needing to ease back into the reality of Sunday morning whilst shedding energy load. Chilling out. After the ultimate up of Italian House (e.g. Black Box) there was nowhere else to go. Ambient house contains the subliminal traces of dance mixes with the soothing sounds of nature and calmative music. So what, you might ask, does this have to do with sheep? The KLF have discovered in working with the guest vocalist sheep on 'Chill Out' that sheep, far from being mindless, lazy animals of easy virtue that is their stereotype, are spiritually highly-evolved creatures who are totally at one with their universe. If you doubt this, just gaze at the cover of 'Chill Out' whilst listening to it and share the serenity."
