To celebrate Newroz, the Kurdish New Year festival in March, join Kurdish author Zara Saleh as he tells this tragic Kurdish love story, written in the 17th century. This video is part of the Ashmolean's 2020-21 One World Festival. “Mem and Zin” is a tragic Kurdish love story from the 17th century. The story was written by the Kurdish classic poet Ehmede Khani in the form of an epic poem based on a true story that happened in the late 14th century. The real story happened in Jazira Bohtan (Jizre now), North Kurdistan (south Turkey now) which was ruled by the Kurdish Prince Zinadin. Mem and Zin's epic tells the tragic story of two young people who fell in love during the Kurdish new year festival Newroz. Mem was a son of a clerk and Zin, the sister of the Prince of Bohtan. Both lovers couldn't fulfil their dream to get married. Mem was imprisoned by the Prince and he died in prison and Zin passed away on the same day when she heard about Mem's death. They were buried together. Zara Saleh is a Kurdish author from Kurdistan (the Syrian part) and has visited the grave of the lovers in Jazira Bohtan, now a shrine for lovers. He saw how they were buried together with the grave of Beki under their feet because he was behind Mem and Zin’s tragedy. Zara has published novels in Kurdish and Arabic and children’s stories in English. Besides that, he graduated to a Master of Pharmacy from Bulgaria and a Master in Peace and Conflict Studies at the Coventry University in the UK. - - - - - - - - This video is part of the Ashmolean's 2020-21 One World Festival.
