This is it — the final episode of our Centennial Trail thru-hike in South Dakota. In Episode 4, we push through the coldest morning of the trip, tackle the longest hiking day of my life, deal with blisters, foot pain, and fatigue, and finally finish the trail by summiting Bear Butte, the northern terminus of the Centennial Trail. After a week of heat in the Black Hills, an unexpected Arctic front dropped temps below freezing — not ideal when you’re carrying a 40° sleep system. From frozen water bags to a 24.5-mile day, this episode is all about grinding it out, adapting, and finishing strong. If you’re interested in thru-hiking, long-distance backpacking, or the Centennial Trail specifically, this episode shows the real highs and lows of an 8-day, 140-mile hike. Thanks for following along on the entire journey — and welcome to the end of the trail.
