What are thyroid cancer symptoms? In this video, UCLA Health endocrinologist Angela Leung explains. One of the most common symptoms of thyroid cancer is a thyroid nodule. These bumps on the thyroid are common — by the time you reach age 50, it's more likely that you will have a thyroid nodule than not. Only around 1 in 10 to 20 thyroid nodules are cancerous. Many people who are diagnosed with thyroid cancer don’t experience any symptoms, and most thyroid nodules have minimal impact on thyroid function. Sometimes large nodules can cause trouble swallowing or a hoarse voice, but most thyroid cancers are detected when smaller. It’s important to note that thyroid nodules (cancerous or benign) usually don't cause pain; consult your doctor if you experience discomfort.
