Based solely on the title, this might easily be dismissed as just another lovers’ break-up song. The reality was much more interesting…and poignant. In the low career period prior to his major 1974 comeback, Neil had felt that it was finally time to dissolve his 17-year songwriting partnership with Howard Greenfield and work more with other collaborators. For this musical ‘goodbye,’ Greenfield peppered the sadly nostalgic lyrics with homages to a number of their previous song hits. As it turned out, the two would reunite in the late ‘70s for a few more songs. The 1973 UK LP in which it was released was recorded in England with co-production by members of 10cc and was appropriately titled “The Tra-La Days Are Over.” In the U.S. the track was not issued on 45 and received its first release in Neil’s popular late-1974 LP “Sedaka’s Back." Bobby Sherman and Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods recorded “Our Last Song Together” in 1975, but both versions only touched briefly upon the lower end of the singles charts.
