No, we're not getting on our bikes today, but we'll do that soon and show you pictures of the sections that are currently open to traffic, as parts of the almost 80-kilometer-long Ahr Cycle Path are already open to traffic again. But, dear cyclists, pay attention: The first new cycle path bridge has just been installed in the Ahr Valley. These are our pictures of the day today. On Monday, April 7, 2025, the time had come. In the Marienthal area, three prefabricated components of the so-called "Lentert Bridge" were lifted into place using heavy cranes. Until the flood in the summer of 2021, a cycle path bridge stood at this location, divided into four spans with piers in the river. It was 54 meters long. The new cycle path bridge is a three-span structure and is 67.50 meters long, 13.5 meters longer than the destroyed structure. The abutments and bridge piers are the same as those on which the new railway bridge was laid. The new structure was built to be flood-resistant thanks to extensive deep foundation work. It stands on 28 bored piles with a diameter of 1.50 meters and a depth of 10.50 meters. The bearings can absorb high impact loads and withstand even extreme flooding. The cycle path bridge was delivered in three sections, 22, 27, and 18.5 meters long. Weighing 67, 81, and 55 tons, respectively, they were transported to the construction site by heavy-duty transporters. They consist of 85-centimeter-thick in-situ concrete, onto which the final surface is still to be applied. This consists of 4 centimeters of mastic asphalt with a 3.5-centimeter-thick protective layer. Welded membranes will be laid over them, followed by priming and sealing. According to the State Office for Mobility, the work is being completed quickly. The date for commissioning has not yet been determined, but it could take place parallel to the opening of the railway line at the end of 2025. Good news, then, from the battered Ahr Valley.
