TONI SMITH - SATURN - BLACK ROCK COALITION Orchestra Summerstage 8/7/04🎶 I'm sharing this video as a tribute to an AMAZING vocalist, and my friend Toni Smith who I learned passed yesterday January 28, 2020. I had the pleasure of working with her on some massive projects that I helped arrange as the Musical Director of the Black Rock Coalition Orchestra (BRC).One of those projects was a live performance of Stevie Wonder's 'Songs in the Key of Life' album in its entirety. We did it 2 times. First at Symphony Space, and then again at Central Park's Summer Stage. Toni closed each set with 'As' and 'Saturn', and blew the roof off each time. She will always be known as the voice of Tom Browne's classic 'Funkin' For Jamaica' which served as the neighborhood anthem for Jamaica, Queens NY. (That's right...the song is NOT about Jamaica, West Indies!), and No...It's NOT sung by Chaka Khan... (Although Toni and 'Yvette' were close friends). and of course, the name of my channel as well! It is indeed a drag that no video exists of these performances, but fortunately I have the audio in my archives, and now I'm sharing it here with you.
