Day 10 of the Muthuswami Dikshitar 250th Jayanthi Series Today, we present a divine kriti in Devagandharam (Abheri), dedicated to Lord Kayarohaneswarar of Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. According to legend, Sage Pundarika, following the guidance of Sage Kanwa, performed intense penance on Lord Shiva, seeking Moksha. Moved by his devotion, the Lord not only granted him salvation but also embraced him physically—a rare occurrence, as the soul typically merges with the divine upon attaining liberation. This unique event gave rise to the name Kaya-Aarogana-Easwarar, which later became Kayarohaneswarar ("Kaya" meaning body and "Aaroganam" meaning merging). Goddess Neelayadakshi, the divine consort, is known for her compassion as vast and deep as the ocean, reflected in her blue-hued eyes. The Sthala Mudra of Nagapattinam is beautifully embedded in the phrase "Siva rAjadhAnI kshEtra sthitam", subtly referencing the sacred location. Stay tuned as we continue exploring the timeless compositions of Sri Muthuswami Dikshitar!
