Mimusops elengi is Indian native plant and is used for a long time in the history of the medicine. Plant was well studied in majority of the world because of its high potential medicinal value. Traditionally all different part of this plant, namely leaf, root, fruit, seed, bark and flower are used to cure various kinds of disorders. Mimusops elengi is a medium-sized evergreen tree found in tropical forests in South Asia, Southeast Asia and northern Australia. English common names include Spanish cherry, medlar, and bullet wood. In it is called maulsari in Hindi, bakul in Sanskrit, Marathi, Bengali,Bokul in Assamese,"Elanji" (ഇലഞ്ഞി) in Malayalam, Manipuri, magizamaram மகிழ், மகிழமரம் and ilanji இலஞ்சி in Tamil, AND ranja "Bakula" (ಬಕುಲ), "Pagade Mara" "Vajradhanthi" in Kannada. Its timber is valuable, the fruit is edible, and it is used in traditional medicine. As the trees give thick shade and flowers emit fragrance, it is a prized collection of gardens. Its flower is the provincial flower of Yala Province, Thailand. The bark, flowers, fruits, and seeds of Bakula are used in Ayurvedic medicine in which it is purported to be astringent, cooling, anthelmintic, tonic, and febrifuge. It is mainly used for dental ailments such as bleeding gums, pyorrhea, dental caries, and loose teeth.
