In this powerful guest sermon, Stan Mitchell challenges a foundational belief in Christian thinking: the concept of inherent separation from God. He argues for a significant shift towards inherent union with God, a belief that he considers the "single most important shift in Christian thinking in the past two plus centuries and arguably in the history of the Christian church". Mitchell explains that while "inherent separation" posits humans are born intrinsically separated from God and in need of a saving act, "inherent union" proclaims that all humans are unequivocally and irrevocably born as beloved children of God, having "ever and always been safe within the love of God". This fundamental difference, he suggests, points to Christianity potentially becoming two very different religions. Mitchell further explores the implications of this shift by re-examining humanity's spiritual condition. He questions whether sin is our primary spiritual illness, proposing instead that shame, from which sin might grow, is the core issue. The Genesis narrative of Adam and Eve is reinterpreted not as a story of sin leading to separation, but of shame and estrangement from an ever-present, loving God. In this view, the cross is understood as God's ultimate act to cure humanity's shame, not just sin, and to demonstrate God's unwavering presence, rather than a means to reconcile an angry God. Salvation, therefore, is presented as less about being reunited with God and more about realizing we were never truly separated, finding our true call in resting in the truth that "we've always been safe".
