Shoutouts: @CaptainBurleySlice @karis2241 @SaldogPiper My Written Review: From the tin, the moisture is just right for smoking. This is presented in a ribbon cut with longer, slightly larger strands. It is almost a ready rubbed but isn’t quite there. The tin aroma is cocoa and a nutmeg like spice. I can smell the nuttiness and earthiness from the Burley. There is a grassy hay aroma that is surely from the Virginias, and some tang from the Oriental. There is a lot of flavor notes and nuanced complexity to this blend. The Burley’s lead with cocoa, earth, and a bold nuttiness. The Virginias in the blend closely rival the Burleys for lead. They offer a good amount of sweetness that tames the rough edge of the Burley. To me it tastes like there is Red and Bright Virginia included. The Red Virginia gives the blend some fullness and richness to the sweetness, but without being overly sweet. I can taste dark fruit and spice from them as well. The Bright Virginia provides lightly grassy notes, dry hay, and a brighter note that isn’t quite citrus. The various Orientals are added in generous quantity. They offer tangy floral notes, woodiness, and a touch of sour. The flavor combination is very unique in several aspect. There is a bitter, sweet, and sour interplay between the Burley, Virginias, and Orientals. The hay notes of the Virginia and the Cocoa of the Burley provide very “autumn” like flavors while at the same time the floral notes of the Oriental provide “spring/summer” flavors. This makes this a great blend to smoke when the leaves just begin to change, when it’s cool out and feels like autumn in the morning, but warmer and spring like in the afternoon. Despite being Burley forward, Eight State Burley has enough Virginia included in the mix that you will want to puff at a slower cadence. It can sport a touch of bite if puffed aggressively. You should aim your keep your pipe as cool as you can, because it is easy for this blend to lose a lot of its finer subtle qualities when it gets hot. Pack lighter than you typically would for a Burley ribbon and smoke it slowly like you would with a Virginia and you will be rewarded with a delightful and nuanced smoke.
