A reading from The Dolls We Left Behind: A Child’s Wartime Journey from Poland to Persia by Eugenia Marta Krajewska Published by Siostry Krajewskie Press (2025) In this short reading from Chapter 1, the author vividly recalls the Polish town of Mołodeczno, where her early childhood unfolded in the peaceful years between the two World Wars. After the rebirth of the Second Polish Republic, Mołodeczno became a thriving town for its diverse ethnic populations. Its strategic importance was recognised by the newly formed Polish government and the garrison at Helenowo came to house the 86th Infantry Regiment. However, despite the protective presence of the regiment, Mołodeczno became a tragic witness to the upheavals of war: Soviet deportations, German occupation, and the horrors of Stalag 342. Yet in these recollections of the Polish borderlands – the Kresy – there remains a deep sense of place, memory, and identity rooted in the lost world of Eastern Poland.
