Magnus Nilsson, MD, PhD, FACS, Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden, discusses the rapid evolution of minimally invasive surgical techniques since the mid-1980s. Over the past 20 years, these techniques have been adopted in cancer surgery, leading to significant changes. Minimally invasive approaches contribute to quicker patient recovery, minimizing the impact on functional recovery and improving the overall quality of life in a shorter period. Research also suggests that complications from surgery may be less severe, and there's emerging evidence indicating potential long-term survival benefits, possibly attributed to the reduced impact on performance status and the immune system compared to more traumatic open procedures.
