Runny nose also called Rhinorrhea is a symptom, when mucus being discharged out of the nose. Rhinorrhea can be accompanied by nasal congestion . Most common cause of Rhinorrhea is Viral infections like: Common cold, Covid 19 and Flu. Another common cause is allergy. Allergy is very common cause, but, allergy has more chronic nature and in many cases patients are informed about their allergy. Other causes are less common including: non allergic chronic rhinitis, polyps, foreign body, substance abuse, for example cocaine, and etc. Rhinorrhea is especially common in cold weather.it is called cold induced rhinorrhea. Main mechanism of runny nose is nasal mucous membranes inflammation. This inflammation can be triggered by virus, allergic reactions, temperature or other less common causes. Management: In most cases, treatment for rhinorrhea is not necessary, since it will clear up on its own—especially if it is the symptom of an infection. Because, mucus production during infection, can have important protective role. It can wash out viruses outside the nose and prevent spreading virus lower airways like bronchi and lungs. Also, it worth to mention that, viral infection in many cases, trigger inflammatory response and rhinorrhea lasts even when viruses already neutralized and not replicate. Viral infection can be complicated by bacterial infection. but, such cases are less then 2 % Nose-blowing may help, but it can also likely proliferate mucosal production, leading to frequent and higher mucus buildups in the nose. Cromolyn Sodium is the example. Anticholinergic sprays. Anticholinergics are used for Management of symptoms associated with rhinorrhea (runny nose) that is associated with seasonal allergic (hay fever) and non-allergic or vasomotor rhinitis. The example of anticholinergics is Ipratropium Bromide Decongestant are used to reduce nasal swelling. The example of decongestants is oxymetazoline and phenylephrine hydrochloride. Do not use these sprays for more than 3 days in a row. Because, Such vasoconstrictor nasal sprays are effective but may become counterproductive after several days of use, causing rhinitis medicamentosa.
