Joharabad (also spelled Jauharabad) is a city and the district headquarters of Khushab District in Punjab, Pakistan. It's a relatively young city, notable for its history as a planned settlement and for its strategic importance. History and Urban Planning The foundation of Joharabad was laid in 1951, and the city was meticulously developed under a master plan to serve as the new federal capital of Pakistan. Its central location was considered ideal for this purpose. However, the plan was eventually abandoned in favor of Islamabad by President Ayub Khan. The city was named in honor of the renowned Pakistani freedom fighter, Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar. Economy and Strategic Significance The economy of Joharabad is primarily based on agriculture and some industry. The city is located in a flat, fertile agricultural territory just south of the Salt Range and near the Jhelum River. It's also home to the Jauharabad Sugar Mills, a major employer in the area. Joharabad holds significant strategic importance for Pakistan as it is the site of a key part of the country's nuclear program, including the Khushab Nuclear Complex, and a nearby Pakistan Air Force Base.
