#JudoForJiujitsu #Taniotoshi In this video, we discuss and demonstrate an alternate method for executing Tani-otoshi (valley drop). Tani-otoshi is sometimes a bit controversial with concerns for safety. When a Tani-otoshi is performed with the Tori's head in the front of the Uke, there is risk of Tori putting weight on the side of the opponent's knee. There is also risk of Uke falling onto Tori's extended leg. This cross sleeve variation is safe for you and your practice partner and is a highly effective takedown for dealing with a low defensive posture (Jigo-tai). A difference between Judo variation and BJJ application is the grip I take on the leg. Leg grabs are prohibited in Judo competition. If this throw is performed without the leg grab, the opponent is able to back-roll away and beat you to the scramble for position. In Judo rules, this does not matter as much, because the point is awarded for the throw rather than for the follow-up. In Jiu-jitsu, it is important to think of the takedown as an advancement of position. Throw with the intent to follow-up directly with positional control or submission.
