And while many absolutely love it here, there are a few things that tend to catch people off guard once they settle in. Today I’m sharing five things people often don’t expect after moving to Nova Scotia, especially if they’re coming from a bigger city. Hi, I’m Alana Anderson, a realtor here in Nova Scotia. I work with a lot of people who are relocating to the province, and these are some of the things I hear about most often after people make the move. Now none of these are necessarily bad things — but they are things that are helpful to know before you move here. So let’s get into it. 1. DISTANCE BETWEEN THINGS The first thing that surprises a lot of people is the distance between things. Nova Scotia is a pretty rural province overall, and while cities like Halifax have everything you need close by, once you move outside the main centres things can get spread out pretty quickly. Sometimes buyers choose homes that are a little more isolated because the price is lower or the property is larger, which can be really appealing at first. But later on they realize they’re driving 30 or even 45 minutes just to get groceries, go to appointments, or take kids to activities. So one piece of advice I often give buyers is to really think about how much driving you're comfortable with and what kind of lifestyle you want day to day. 2. SNOW DAYS Another thing that surprises some people is snow days. Even a relatively small amount of snow can result in school closures, and sometimes businesses close as well. Compared to larger cities where everything tends to keep moving no matter the weather, things can slow down pretty quickly here when winter weather hits. It’s just part of life in Nova Scotia — and honestly a lot of people learn to enjoy those slower days once they settle in. 3. HEALTHCARE WAIT TIMES Healthcare is another topic that comes up fairly often with people who move here. It can be difficult to get a family doctor right away, and that’s something many new residents aren’t expecting. The province has been working to improve access with things like primary care clinics and services like the Maple app, which allow you to speak with doctors online. But it’s definitely something people should be aware of before moving here. 4. RURAL LIVING REALITIES If you’re considering living outside of the main cities, there are also some rural living realities to keep in mind. Many homes in Nova Scotia operate on wells and septic systems instead of municipal water and sewer. Internet availability can vary depending on location, although it’s improving all the time. And of course we share the outdoors with a lot of wildlife — deer, coyotes, and unfortunately ticks are something people need to be aware of. None of these things are necessarily deal breakers, but they can be new experiences for people coming from more urban environments. 5. THE SLOWER PACE OF LIFE The last one is something that can be both an adjustment and one of the best parts of living here. Life in Nova Scotia tends to move at a slower pace. Whether it’s booking services, getting work done on your home, or sometimes even day-to-day life in general, things can take a little longer than people are used to in larger cities. For some people that adjustment takes a bit of time. But for many others, that slower pace is exactly why they end up loving it here. At the end of the day, despite these adjustments, a lot of people who move to Nova Scotia fall completely in love with the lifestyle here. The scenery, the communities, and the quality of life can be really special.
