In which a time traveler stepped on a butterfly, resulting in Sonic being the go-to Nintendo franchise. This is a ROM Hack (https://romhacking.com/hack/mario-64-...) which predictably replaces Mario with Sonic, alongside changing the movement system by a large amount in order to be more Sonic-like. This includes ground speed (Natural running speed of 80 vs 32, conserves up to 200 speed instead of 48), air speed (Aerial acceleration is much higher, single jumps allow Sonic to turn in the air twice as quickly as on the ground), being able to spindash (Which allows Sonic to instantly get about 360 speed when doing a final slidekick after the spindash release), alongside other miscellaneous changes (Can't long jump, double jump, triple jump, or swim; trying to dive on the ground just results in a punch). This aims to be the "any%" TAS of the hack; due to BLJs being removed, 1 Key is impossible (As far as I know). A previous TAS made by @GSRTHEMID nearly two years ago was able complete this with 1 Star; I found that it's barely possible to skip the DDD portal and finish the game with zero stars. As seen throughout the TAS, spindashing is crucial for going very fast, but it's not enough by itself: When spindashing and then slidekicking on the ground, you only keep that maximum ~360 speed for one frame before it drops back down to about 120 speed or so - falling off of a ledge, however, allows that full speed to be conserved. Thus, whenever possible, I aim to spindash off of a ledge and immediately hit a wall, in order to wallkick and keep my speed across entire sections of a level. Level notes: Castle Yard: No ledges in the immediate area, so I use a jump-airdash to start from idle, run up the hill, and then do a series of jump kicks to skip "Lakitu" and enter the castle. Lobby 1: I make my way up the stairs, hop on a small ledge, and then spindash off of it to skip right through the 8-Star Door. Eggman in the Dark World: In which I first repeat the spindash trick on the ledge near the start, wallkick off of the ramp section, get to another spindash section, cut through the middle of the level by running up the spire, and then do a final spindash cancel. I was stuck on this section for a while, until I realized I could wallkick off of the box, which allowed me to get the right height and angle to get right to the end. Eggman 1: Even though Sonic can't dive while on the ground, his airdash can still grab the Egg Koopa's tail, which makes the fight go about the same as in the original game. Lobby 2: I do a spindash past the door again followed by a series of jumps to make my way to the basement Basement: By spindashing off of the correct ledge and doing a series of wallkicks (One of them pause buffered), it's barely possible to get enough speed to skip past the DDD portal. Eggman in the Fire Sea: Starts off with a spindash cancel and a wallkick to get to the pole, in which it's just barely possible to perform the hanging mesh upwarp from the original game. I then do a gigantic chain of wallkicks to reach the exit warp. Eggman 2: It's possible to reach Eggman before the Egg Koopa lands on the ground, which means skipping the five seconds of waiting for the platform to move around. Lobby 3: Because Sonic can't swim, he doesn't have a swim idle state, which means he can't pause exit in DDD easily; this makes it faster to backtrack through the lobby to reach upstairs. Lobby 4: Standard movement followed by a series of spindash cancels in order to skip both star doors and the endless stairs. Eggman in the Sky: Uses multiple Glitchy Wall Kicks throughout the level in order to conserve speed better, alongside everything else at Sonic's disposal. Eggman 3: Basically a repeat of the first two fights, except with three bombs instead of one. As a first attempt, I think this is a pretty good run, but as with all first attempts, there's almost certainly improvements scattered about. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Become a member!
