First 2021outing, always good to be out, but catching while we testing a new fly line setup is a great way to start the new season. The test on the new Skagit max power shooting head from RIO could't start any better. The first impression, just powerful and easy to cast in this conditions and 6” half and half heavy dressed fly pattern, no doubt they will also work in knarly surf as well the early Skagit short did for me, they are so balance than it can easily be overpowering if the caster try to ”horse the system,” I like to “dimmer” or vary somehow the casting stroke transitions from the lift to the anchor fire key position regardless the anchor family group I choose, the more I smother the dimmer the power stroke, the better the results in the turn overs, perhaps finding the sweet spot with this NEW system is wider than any other prior Skagit head, it could be a bit challenging to print the same style for the newbie fly caster in the memory muscle, it’s very easy to cast, very forgiving, and possibly can create a false perception of the caster actual skill level with this Rio power max,it can be a problem once we do the transition to a more traditional Spey fly line system with longer head and profile, the opposite perception might happen. Great first starting surfskagit caster shooting head for the Switch rod. Love it!!
