Located right in the city centre, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens are always a pleasure to walk through. From the spring drifts of daffodils and spectacular summer roses to stunning autumn leaf displays and cosy conservatories to explore in winter, there's something to delight in every season. Video date: 11 April 2025 The Christchurch Botanic Gardens, located in the central city of Christchurch, New Zealand, were founded in 1863, when an English oak was planted to commemorate the solemnisation of the marriage of Prince Albert and Princess Alexandra of Denmark. The gardens sprawl over an area of 21 hectares and lie adjacent to the loop of the Avon River next to Hagley Park. The Christchurch Botanic Gardens have a variety of collections of exotic and local plants of New Zealand, several conservatories, a nursery, playground and Climatological Station. Christchurch is the largest city in South Island New Zealand with a population of around 390,000 people. It is one of the world’s most unique destinations, combining urban regeneration and innovation with heritage, culture and exhilarating activity. On Tuesday 22 February 2011 Christchurch was badly damaged by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake, which killed 185 people and injured several thousand. Many heritage buildings were heavily damaged, over a quarter of the buildings in the central business district were demolished. Christchurch rebuild is still working in progress and aiming to develop Christchurch into an innovative and modern community.
