Simulated Methanol Fire Safety Drill at Noman M. Cole Jr. Pollution Control Plant

Fairfax County Fire/Recuse with Department of Public Works teamed up for a series of exercises to demonstrate Emergency Response abilities with a new firefighting foam product. Noman M. Cole Jr. Pollution Control Plant provided the setting, along with Methanol Bulk Storage Facilities for a mock response. The training scenario presented Fire Department personnel with the challenges of an Industrial Plant, large population, and bulk storage of Methanol, to include product delivery and transfer. The scenario, focused on a Methanol tanker truck, smoking with “Hot Brakes”. FFC plant personnel identified and reported the fire to 9-1-1, resulting in a plant-wide evacuation exercise for 254 persons in 11 minutes. The Fire Department, then practiced application of the new foam, to include implementation strategies, set-up, and use.
