Is India Driving Onion Prices In Pakistan? | MoneyCurve | Dawn News English

Due to the Indian ban on onion exports, Pakistani exporters are benefiting from increased foreign exchange earnings. However, local consumers are bearing the brunt, paying up to Rs240 per kg for onions in domestic markets. The ban led to a surge in local rates from between Rs120 and Rs140 to Rs160 and Rs180, and prices continue to rise due to thriving exports, impacting inflation-hit consumers. India, the world's biggest exporter of onions, had banned shipments on December 8 2023 after domestic prices more than doubled in three months following a drop in production. With reports suggesting that India may lift the ban due to decreasing prices, Pakistani exporters are seizing the opportunity until New Delhi resumes onion exports. Watch the full video to understand the impact of the Indian onion ban on Pakistan’s vegetable export dynamics. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dawn News English is your window into the latest news, insight, and features from South Asia and beyond.
