Abnormal values indicate the presence of anemia and which type of anemia it is. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) is the average volume of a red blood cell and is calculated by dividing the hematocrit (Hct) by the concentration of red blood cell count. Mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) is the average amount of hemoglobin (Hb) per red blood cell and is calculated by dividing the hemoglobin by the red blood cell count. Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) is the average concentration of hemoglobin per unit volume of red blood cells and is calculated by dividing the hemoglobin by the hematocrit. It also checks your blood for signs of medication side effects. Providers use this test to screen for diseases and adjust treatments. A CBC measures and counts your blood cells RED BLOOD CELLS/ Erythrocytes • Normal range = 4 to 5.5 million/ cu mm • Decreases = Anaemia • Increases= polycythemia (more than 7 million/ cu mm) Hb, HCT/PCV, MCV, MCH, MCHC Hb Haemoglobin = Haemoglobin (Hb) is a protein found in the red blood cells that carries oxygen in your body and gives blood its red colour. • Normal range= 9 to 13 gm /dL • Decreases anaemia, thalassemia, sickle cell anemia HCT / PCV The hematocrit / packed cell volume is the proportion, by volume, of the blood that consists of red blood cells. The hematocrit (hct) is expressed as a percentage. For example, a hematocrit of 25% means that there are 25 milliliters of red blood cells in 100 milliliters of blood. Normal range= 35 to 40 % MCH .
