Various of the march STORYLINE: Thousands of protesters rallied and marched in Taipei on Saturday to demand that the island's official name be changed from the "Republic of China" to "Taiwan." The issue of renaming the island is extremely sensitive because such a change could provoke China, which has repeatedly threatened to attack if Taiwan makes any such bold moves towards independence. Police estimated that there were eight thousand marchers in the capital, many wearing purple headbands saying "The parade for Taiwan's correct name." Protesters also want their own Republic of Taiwan passports, instead of the current ones which say Republic of China. The protest kicked off with a speech by law professor and presidential adviser Chen Lung-chu, who stood on a stage decorated with a dangling disco ball and Christmas lights. The marchers tousled briefly with a small group of pro-China supporters, who pulled up in a van with a platform and loudspeakers on top.
