Scientists temporarily attached a pig's kidney to a human body and watched it begin to work, a small step in the decades-long quest to one day use animal organs for life-saving transplants. More than 90,000 people in the U.S. are in line for a kidney transplant. Every day, 12 die while waiting. Pig-to-human transplants could address the organ shortage. One hurdle: A sugar in pig cells, foreign to the human body, causes immediate organ rejection. The kidney for this experiment came from a gene-edited animal, engineered to eliminate that sugar and avoid human immune system attack. Surgeons attached the pig kidney to a pair of large blood vessels in the human groin, but kept it outside the body so they could observe it for two days. The organ did what a kidney is supposed to do. It filtered waste, produced urine and didn't trigger rejection — a scientific success. ------------------ For More News and Videos SUBSCRIBE and Turn Notifications On https://bit.ly/2r0BEND Get a Digital Subscription to the Tampa Bay Times https://bit.ly/2Xinunj Follow us: Facebook ► / tampabaycom Twitter ► / tb_times Instagram ► / tampabaytimes
