Bane is our 14 year old Percheron gelding. He came to the ranch about a year ago and has been in training since. Today, he is wearing his first full set of shoes and the plan is to give him a good workout. We’ll catch the horses, brush him out, clean his hooves, saddle him up, and ride. As we prepare Bane for a ride, we’ll talk about the history of the Percheron and horses in the US. A few fun facts: Le Perche is a region of Normandy (Northern France), where the bloodline was originated, likely during the 8th Century. Vikings landed in France with heavy cold weather horses with thick manes. The French crossed these giant drafts with Arab horses to give them versatility, agility, intelligence, and calm demeanor under pressure. A knight in full armor weighed over 550 pounds; they needed a special horse to be able to carry this rider. The Percheron was the perfect fit and is often featured in paintings from the era. It is estimated more than 32,000 Percherons exist worldwide today, after a decades long recovery. The Percheron Horse Association of America registers an average of 1,050 new horses annually. Percherons stand 16.2-17.3 hands high and weigh 1,800 to 2,600 pounds. Bane is 18 hands. We are unsure of his exact weight. We’ll have to hit a truck weigh station to in the near term to get an accurate weight. Percherons arrived in the US in 1839. One Percheron did the work of 4 horses. The automobile and John Deere Tractors nearly wiped out the population of Percherons in the 1930s. There were 3M horses in the US. The population fell to 20k by 1950. If you dig deeper, much of their breeding in the last 100 years was geared toward meat production. Bane spent much of his early life without a job. We are helping him build muscle and endurance, and I hope to race him against Lady in a 4-day ultramarathon next February. The rest of his life at Railhead Ranch will be fulfilling and interesting, to say the least! Stay tuned to keep up with his progress. He is making huge strides every day. Lastly: A special thank you to Garmin for making the Enduro 3, and for including the Horseback Riding activity. #ranchlife #railheadranch #percheron Don't forget to visit us on Instagram: @LadyRunsTheRanch and @RunWorkRanch
