In the summer of 1943, while the world watched the Battle of Kursk, a brutal and forgotten struggle was unfolding along a small river in eastern Ukraine. The Mius River offensive pitted the Soviet Southern Front against the battered German Sixth Army — and would call in some of the most feared SS divisions on the Eastern Front to stop the breakthrough. This is the story told by Karl Hendriksen, a Dutch volunteer serving as a squad leader in the 5th SS Panzergrenadier Division Wiking, as his unit fights house by house through the burning village of Stepanivka in the bloodiest days of July and August 1943. From Soviet air strikes at dawn, to tank charges in the dead of night, to the quiet horror of counting who is missing after the battle — this is World War 2 as lived from the inside. A first-person account of one of the most overlooked battles on the Eastern Front, told with historical accuracy and the raw realism of men who survived — and those who didn't.
