Fireflies belong to the family Lampyridae and are members of the largest order in the insect kingdom, Coleoptera, commonly called beetles. Fireflies are well-known for their bioluminescence, e.g. use of light signals for specie recognition during mate search. Fireflies are spread across temperate and tropical zones all over the world and occur in all continents except Antarctica (Lloyd 2008). Although fireflies occur in a range of habitats, some species are mainly dependent on mangrove ecosystem. These include species of the Pteroptyx genus that can be found in Southeast Asia (Nallakumar 2002). The habitat, life cycle and ecology of fireflies were studied along the Abatan River in Bohol, Philippines by Middlejans in 2014. This Study was conducted for six months and is important since no research on fireflies has been done in the province.
