Today we believe that the electrons in the atoms of a medium play the major role in the propagation of light through that medium. However new studies suggest that, contradictory to the present-day belief, the particles in the atoms of a medium play no role in the propagation of light in that medium. This finding has a huge significance in the understanding of the structure of the atom.
