The history of CTA's 2600 Series cars, built by Budd in 1981-1987. Below is a list of incidents and accidents involing these cars. March, 1988: Wilson Station derailment (North-South Route). Train derails at Wilson station, and car #3031 is irreparably damaged and is retired. Meanwhile, car #3032 is stored on long term hold until a new 3200 Series car (#3457) was built to be paired with it. #3032 was renumbered #3458 as a result. Winter 1999: A blizzard disables half of all 2600 Series cars due to intake of snow by the cars, and a severe rolling stock shortage ensues. At this time, the cars were not overhauled, and the overhaul corrected this problem. September, 2013: "The Ghost Train". An empty train with no operator moves by itself from Des Plaines Yard (Forest Park, IL) until it collides with a a Forest Park-bound Blue Line train head-on. Four 2600 Series cars were retired as a result of this accident (#3171-3172 and #3177-3178). March, 2014: train climbs escalator at O'Hare. An operator falls asleep at the controls of an O'Hare-bound Blue Line train during Owl Service and the train crashes into the end of the platform and climbs the escalator. At least four 2600 Series cars were retired due to this accident (#3061-3062 and #3087-3088) and the O'Hare station was closed for a week. Car #3061 was cut apart at O'Hare station.
