A common problem with older horns is that the valves have little to no compression, leading to a horn that "feels stuffy", notes that are uncentered, and a fuzzy sound that can lead many players to feel like they are 'bad at the horn'. While you certainly need to work hard and have the right technique on the horn, I'm fairly convinced that if you have a good instrument, you can have a good sound and find success on the instrument. Notes will center well, the tone will be good, and you will near certainly enjoy playing your horn. But in my dealings with used horns, I have come across dozens of horns that do not have good valves. The valves leak. These horns do come, sometimes, from people who have quit horn. I would not be surprised if the leaky valves have discouraged the player. If you use fairly good technique and can't seem to center your horn sound, perhaps try another horn and see if it helps! My goal as a used horn dealer is that every horn that leaves my shop and is sold on my website is playing to the best it can, which means if I end up with a horn with bad valves, I will not sell it until it has good valves and will give it's purchaser the best chance at succeeding on the horn. This is the first video in what I hope will be a series of videos showing how I work through my very first full valve rebuild. I am not plating the valves, but I'm rather putting in a new set of valves from another horn. For this to be done, you must have valves from the same model of horn - otherwise it will not work properly. I got mine from Texas Horn Trader (texashorntrader.com) - the owner (Keegan) very kindly found the right set of valves. I certainly recommend him if you are looking for parts for an older instrument! Disclaimer: This video is a window into my learning process as a technician. I am by no means a professional valve rebuilder. I'm learning, and I'm letting my audience watch me learn. If you have experience with valve rebuilding and have suggestions and thoughts, please comment below or send me a message on my website! I am not currently offering valve rebuilds as part of my shop services. Check out my website: www.boydsbrass.com Subscribe to the channel if you haven't already!
