The exterior layer of the eyelid is composed of thin skin. Epidermis consists of stratified squamous kerainized epithelium with papillae. In dermis are hair follicles with sebaceous glands and sweat glands. The interior layer of the eyelid is a palpebral conjunctiva lined by stratified cuboidal or squamous non-keratinized epithelium. The thin lamina propria of the interior layer contains elastic and collagen fibres. Inferior to the lamina propria is a plate of dense collagenous connective tissue called tarsus, which contains specialized sebaceous glands called tarsal (meibomian) gland. The free end of the eyelid contains eyelashes that arise from large long hair follicles. Associated with eyelashes are sebaceous glands. Between the eyelashes are large sweat glands (of Moll). The eyelid contains orbicularis oculi, it is skeletal muscle. Lacrimal gland is a serous compound gland with tuboalveolar acini surrounded by myoepithelial cells.
