(24 Jan 2001) English/Nat German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has tried to calm a dispute with Britain over the future of Europe. At a joint news conference with British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, Fischer denied coming under pressure to water down a pro-European speech he's due to make in London on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, Cook insisted the two countries see eye to eye on the European question. German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer is among the strongest advocates of European integration - poles apart from his British counterpart, Robin Cook. But the two foreign ministers insisted on Wednesday that they were agreed on the way forward. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We have had many discussions on Europe and we worked very closely together at the Nice European Council. The outcome of that European Council reflected many of the initiatives that we have taken together. We both helped to prepare a text on the agenda for future development of the European Union after Nice. We both share very strongly the need for Europe to look at the balance between the European Union and the member states so that the European Union focuses on the cross-border international issues, and issues that affect their domestic democracies. And we will both be taking a full part in that discussion." SUPER CAPTION: Robin Cook, British Foreign Secretary SOUNDBITE: (English) "I agree absolutely." SUPER CAPTION: Joschka Fischer, German Foreign Minister Fischer denied reports he's been forced to tone down a pro-European speech he was due to give in London later on Wednesday. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I was invited to give a speech today and I will give it quite willingly. I'm not going to go back on that. All I can say is that we are working on all the European issues, based on the different interests and common goals and traditions of the member countries. I think it's all tied together. This government, like previous ones, is working towards this purpose. There were lots of press reports, and to sell more papers they report things that aren't based on fact to do with UK-German relations. They weren't true then, and they weren't true now. We work well together." SUPER CAPTION: Joschka Fischer, German Foreign Minister The two foreign ministers then left the stand - heading in different directions.
