Titian, or actually Tiziano Vecellio, is considered the leading representative of 16th century Venetian painting and one of the main masters of the Italian High Renaissance. Titian was born around 1488 to 1490 in Pieve di Cadore, a small town in the Republic of Venice. He received training from the Bellini brothers as a child, founded his own workshop at the age of around 25 and became a celebrated artist. Emperor Charles V elevated him to the nobility and appointed him court painter. He also traveled to Rome and Augsburg. Titian had two sons with his first wife Cecilia. After her death, he married again and had another daughter, who can also be found in his paintings. It is possible that he had another illegitimate daughter. Titian died of the plague in Venice in 1576 at the advanced age of around 86. Titian's painting style was characterized by a masterful technique and a remarkable sense of color and light. Towards the end of his long life, his work became darker and more impressionistic, probably also influenced by various strokes of fate. He painted portraits as well as landscapes, mythological and religious subjects. His motifs reflected a wide range of human emotions. His three most famous works include: The sensual painting "Venus of Urbino", which became an iconic work in art history due to its elegance and sophistication. In the mythological painting "Bacchus and Ariadne", Titian captures the moment when the god Bacchus falls in love with the beautiful Ariadne with a dynamic composition and vivid colors. And in his haunting self-portrait, painted around fifteen hundred and sixty-two, he shows his artistic maturity. The expression in his eyes and the subtle use of light and shadow testify to his deep understanding of the human psyche. Titian's life's work spans more than seven decades and over 600 works. He was one of the most prolific Italian painters of his time. His works influenced not only artists of his time, but also subsequent generations, including Rubens, Watteau and Delacroix.
